International reference to marine meteorological data requires common observation methods and equipment verification for accuracy.
Meteorological observation equipment on ships operating in extreme conditions (including rolling, pitching and saline winds) requires regular checking.
JMA provides free barometer checking as part of its PMS activities. In Japan, VOSs performing weather observation and reporting regularly can request this service by email.
Barometers should be checked every six months to maintain accuracy.
Barometer checking is exclusively for ships in Japanese ports, and is not provided for ships at sea or in ports outside Japan.
JMA provides email-based barometer checking services for VOSs calling at Japanese ports based on comparison of ship readings and values from the nearest observatory.
To request service, fill out the form and submit it to JMA.
The email barometer check request form was revised in April 2021, and can be downloaded in Word or PDF format in either Japanese or English.
JMA also supports independent checking for barometers on ships calling at Japanese ports, with results provided much more quickly.
See Independent Checking of On-board Barometers for details.
We revised the request form for Barometer Check by email in April 2021.
You can download the form. Word or PDF form is available in both Japanese and English.
